Diamond Meaning and History
The word diamond comes from the Greek word adamas, meaning “invincible”. Diamonds are often associated with strength and this legacy ties directly into its use as a symbol of durability and resilience.
Diamonds were traded as early as the fourth century BC in India where they were coveted by the wealthy. Eventually, traders brought diamonds to markets in medieval centers like Venice where they quickly became popular among Europe’s elite. The first diamond engagement ring on record was given in 1477 by Archduke Maximillian of Austria.
By the early 1700s, Brazil emerged as an important source of diamonds as supplies in India started to decline. Brazil dominated the market until diamonds were discovered in South Africa in the 1860s. The largest diamond ever found was recovered from South Africa’s Premier mine in 1905.
Diamond Color
Diamonds are available in a variety of colors and graded on a D-to-Z scale by the GIA, ranging from colorless (D-F) to light yellow or brown (S-Z). Colorless diamonds are the most sought after and valuable, these diamonds appear crystal clear.
Colored diamonds like blue, pink, or red are classified as “Fancy” and categorized differently than the D-to-Z scale. The color changes stem from chemical impurities or structural distortions.
Diamond Cut & Shape
The cut of a diamond describes the overall design and how it interacts with light. Terms like Oval and Pear refer to the shape, or the outline of the diamond. Diamond cut grades are only given to round brilliant cut diamonds because they have standardized facets.
